31 Bible Verses to Give You Hope: Perseverance

There’s a scene from the American version of “The Office” where Andy says, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire life.” Then he remarks, “I haven’t had a very hard life.”

A lot of everyday problems we encounter – are they really problems? The wrong item delivered, a small disagreement, an appliance not working. Obviously, they don’t make your day. When I look back on my life, I think Andy’s statement pretty well describes me before, say, age 25. There are a number of much more difficult times that have happened since then!

A book I read a few years ago was “Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart” by Maria C. Furlough. A huge problem was before her, and God got her through it. It wasn’t all happy endings or promises a perfect life afterwards. But it was everyday testimony to her heart that whatever worries may be before her, that God would be with her and sustain her.

This book really helped me after my husband’s heart attack (that he survived, praise the Lord!) God used that time to show me how He could handle big, big problems in my life. My trust in Him grew as He took me through times that I did not think I could get through.

No matter the trial, we can give thanks that we trust in God who is much bigger than our problems. He will use the trial to shape us into who He wants us to be. As we read in James 1:4 NIV, “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Maybe you won’t emerge from a big, big problem with a sparkling testimony. Maybe it will have times of doubt, anger, and giving up. But don’t overlook the fact that you got through it. That, in itself, is something huge that you can praise God for! God brought you through something you didn’t think you could withstand.

Lord, It can be so easy to take our eyes off of you! Help us to trust in You as we go through trials. Guide us toward Your truths and away from our doubts. Do Your work in us through these trials, that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
