31 Bible Verses to Give You Hope: Staying in Shape

6 mile runs. Don’t drink soda. Get plenty of sleep. These were some of the efforts our team had to make as high school cross country runners. (I didn’t do too well on the soda thing, by the way!) Our coaches also wanted us to listen to them and follow their instructions. I am sure that they would have been frustrated if we followed advice about running from our friends or something we had read in a magazine. It was the late 1980s, so I’m sure that there was some bad advice out there! We trained to be the best high school athletes we could be.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV mentions physical training being of some value, but mostly focuses on training in godliness. It starts out in an unexpected way.

“Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

There are theories and methods that claim to fix something missing in our lives, but have nothing to do with God and could very well contradict biblical principles. Instead, God wants us to focus on training for godliness, committed as an athlete might be. This includes prayer, reading God’s Word, and serving Him, among other things. 

Father, Let us prioritize our training in godliness above all else. Help us not to be taken captive by deceptive and hollow philosophies. May we honor You in all we do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
