He loved us first!
“We love because He first loved us.” I John 4:19.
I checked a few translations (NKJV, KJV, AMP), and with other sources, and the object that we love in that verse is God! We love Him because He first loved us. He loved us first – He created us in His own image, He wanted to have fellowship with us, He gave up His own son on the cross to redeem us. We respond to His love by loving Him. Sounds easy, right? We can agree with that. And yet later in the chapter, when we get to verse 21, we might want to argue. “Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” The word they use for brother in Greek can mean literal brothers and sisters, and also fellow members of a Christian community. Which can bring up a response: “I have to love THAT person?”
Yet think about all the times in your life when God could have said that to you! When you sinned the same sin for the zillionth time. When you acted so mean to the people you loved the most. When you wouldn’t love someone after all God has done for you.
Let’s not only be inspired by God’s love, but love others by the Holy Spirit inside of you! Pray for God’s love to come through you.
