When our kids were young, a neighbor gave us a fig tree that we planted in our backyard. It seemed like it would never get strong enough to stay alive in our harsh climate, but it is now taller than me. From the window, the tree looks fine. But the fruit is inedible and sad looking, even though the leaves look healthy and fine from a distance. With enough time, this tree may bear fruit we can eat, but for now, it doesn’t.
When do we get close enough to others to notice that something has gone wrong? When do we go past the “fine” answers to “how are you doing?” And when do we not allow people time to grow before demanding perfect fruit?
I Thessalonians 5:11 ESV “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
Take time to notice others, to talk to them and see how they are doing today.
