“I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.” Psalm 38:8-9
The context of Psalm 38 is David, repentant before the Lord, and humbled by the circumstances which were, at least in part, brought on by his own sin. Yet even in this grief, this trouble, this regret, David lays it out to God. He lies his longings before God. He places his grief in God’s view. He tells Him how he is feeling.
Sometimes when we are crushed by circumstances, sometimes of our own making or of someone else’s, we avoid God because we are mad at Him, we are angry at ourselves, or we don’t feel like we can bring this kind of stuff to God. Yet David, he was open with God and put it all out there in front of Him. He was honest with himself and with God. I think that we can follow David’s example in this, to be open with God and bring our burdens, our grief, and our confusion to God. We also need to bring our repentance to Him, that we would not be cherishing sin in our hearts.
God already knows what you are thinking. He is an expert in you! Be open with Him about what you are going through, and be ready to listen to Him.
