5 Bible Verses about Parenting on JulianaGordon.com

“What To Expect When You’re Expecting” was a very popular book when I was pregnant over 20 years ago. This hefty tome, whose newest version is over 600 pages, gave me a combination of reassurance (“It covers anything I could ever think of!”) and trepidation (“My real life doesn’t look exactly like the book! I must worry about it!”). Even more worrisome was the follow up “What To Expect The First Year.” It gave the same security with a hefty dose of worries, but now about kids!

I’m sure that many moms found all this information helpful, and maybe I even did at the time. But reflecting back, I learned more from conversations with family and other parents. I was encouraged by moms and grandmas who pointed me towards God as the source of strength and rest, both of which I desperately needed at the time. God’s Word also strengthened me for each day, and also for the parenting journey ahead. Here are 5 Bible Verses about parenting to encourage moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers who get to be part of a child’s life.

Nurture instead of provoking

“You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

We can take refuge in Him

“How precious is your loving kindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 36:7

Teach children to keep God’s commands as part of everyday life

“These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Do not lead a child into sin

“Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea.” Matthew 18:5-6

Parent with the long term in mind

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

God’s wisdom will always help us be better parents. May God use these Bible verses about parenting to strengthen you today!
