Were you great at hide and seek as a kid? I wasn’t, usually. But I remember playing it once at my grandparent’s house where I found the best hiding place! My cousin heard me go into one room but couldn’t find me because I had slipped into the closet and gone to the far other end, as the single row closet ran the length of the room, and came out in the room next to it. I remember winning that game, as I had found the right place to hide.
When life’s problems are seeking us out and we need to find the right place to take refuge, the best place to be is with our Lord! Psalm 91:3-4 speaks to us about how God rescues us. I cherish these word pictures in these two verses, of God rescuing us and shielding us. We are far from alone when we are persevering through trials. Instead, we have a refuge in our God.
“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” Psalm 91:3-4 KJV
The Hebrew “ חָסָה”or the word “ḥāsâ” is translated most often as to trust, but at times is also translated as “to take refuge” or “to have hope.” When we are under His wings, we can trust that we are in the right place and that His truth is protecting us. When we try to hide in other places – denial, addiction, anger, blaming others – we put our hope in the wrong thing. God is the only One worthy of our hope.
Friend, are you overwhelmed by today’s struggle? Find your refuge in Him!
This is part of my #walkthroughpsalm91 series. I hope you will join me throughout the year as I visit Psalm 91, a beautiful chapter that provides so much hope.
