Laid back. Flexible. Adaptable. Not words you’d use to describe me. I like a plan. I crave routine and predictability. And don’t hate me, but I even like most Mondays, with its fresh starts and new projects. A pandemic, a shelter-in-place order, and struggling to find a new normal have put all of those Type A tendencies into a tizzy.
While it’s good for us to know our tendencies and preferences, we run into problems when we let them be the defining characteristics of our lives. If I let those things listed above control how I react to things I can’t control, then I will be disappointed, angry, and upset. Instead, focusing on God’s truth about how to adjust to our ever changing lives, pandemic or not, is the far better choice.
Proverbs 16:9 “The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.”
I Thessalonians 5:18 “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Proverbs 19:21 “Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.”
Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?”
While a good plan can honor the Lord, so can our willingness to let go of our plan and just walk with Him. Some of the things we cling to in our life for comfort have changed. Some certainties have become unstable. The clarity we seek for answers isn’t always there.
Each day, we can look to our God of hope to direct our steps to do His will. And the next day, we can do it again.
