Finding Hope in the Holiday Season

Hope: And in his name shall nations hope. Matthew 12:21 YLT

When there’s little joy to our world, when the evening hours are filled with worry instead of being a silent night, it can be hard to get into the Christmas spirit. We try so hard to capture the “magic” of Christmas that we remember from our youth or have seen in a made-for-TV movie. Even Advent (the four Sundays before Christmas) can be stressful as we try to create a super-spiritual time for ourselves or our families. The Christmas season comes but once a year, and we can feel a lot of pressure to get everything right.

As Advent starts today, let’s focus one of the traditional themes for this first Sunday: HOPE. There will be a verse for every day and a prayer for the week. This simple format can be a good reminder to reflect on Jesus even in the busiest of seasons.

Day 1

And in his name shall nations hope.” Matthew 12:21 YLT

Day 2

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 NASB

Day 3

“For You are my hope; Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth” Psalm 71:5 NASB

Day 4

‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10 NASB

Day 5

For I hope in You, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord my God.“ Psalm 38:15 NASB1995

Day 6

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.” Lamentations 3:24 NASB1995

Day 7

“And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:5 NASB

A Prayer for Hope

Dear Jesus, You are the reason for our hope. Thanks can’t even begin to cover what You did for us, the sacrifices you made for us, the love and mercy You have shown us. We pray that You will be glorified in our lives as we deal with the particular challenges this season brings. Thank you for being our hope. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
