Finding Joy in Christ

Finding Joy in Christ

“Find Your Joy”, “Do More Of What Makes You Happy”, and “Follow Your Bliss” are all inspirational signs I recently saw as I browsed home decor. I do love an encouraging sign, but the sentiments on these signs can lead into searching for joy and happiness in places that don’t fulfill us ultimately. How can we be finding joy in Christ?

This quote from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity (affiliate link) points us toward the true source. “If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them. They are not a sort of prize which God could, if He chose, just hand out to anyone.”

Our joy is ultimately found in abiding in Christ. These Bible verses about joy are helpful reminders of what true joy is and how we can find joy in Christ.

Joy is found in His presence

C.S. Lewis’ quote aptly illustrates being close to God to experience His joy and peace. These verses further underline how joy can be found in living a Christian life close to God.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 ESV

“For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.” Psalm 21:6 ESV

“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:10-11 ESV

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13 ESV

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

Joy is found in rejoicing

If we don’t stop to be thankful and to realize what God has given to us, we can miss out on joy! Here are just a couple of the verses that remind us of that.

“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” Psalm 126:2 ESV

“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:18 ESV

Joy may be found during painful times

This may be the hardest truth to accept, but many a Christian who have gone through horrendous circumstances say that they experienced peace and joy like never before during that trial. Francis Chan said it well in “Crazy Love.” (affiliate link)

The Bible teaches that true joy is formed in the midst of the difficult seasons of life. A person who is obsessed with Jesus is more concerned with his or her character than comfort. Obsessed people know that true joy doesn’t depend on circumstances or environment; it is a gift that must be chosen and cultivated, a gift that ultimately comes from God (James 1:2-4).”

We can find our joy outside of our circumstances, or even despite them. Psalm 126:5 ESV tells us that “Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!” James 1:2-3 ESV says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” God wants us to find our joy in Him even when we face challenges, knowing that it will give us a stronger and deeper faith.
