I remember a high school teacher explaining temperament types. and realizing with disappointment that I was of melancholy temperament. It was disappointing because it didn’t seem as fun as the other types. Over the years, different classification systems or other observations have labeled me as introverted, a realist, a pessimist, a planner. I reluctantly accepted these labels because they seemed to describe me, but it also made me feel like I didn’t have as much faith as Christians who were naturally laid back. I don’t accept that as truth anymore – God created me to meet many needs that require my personality. But there are weaknesses in this type of outlook, and one of those is being able to naturally find joy. I have to work at reminding myself to see what God has provided, to enjoy what is going on and not worry about each detail or what is happening next. This is especially true during the Christmas season.
These verses are great reminders to find our joy in the Lord and what He has provided for us, and to depend on Him for what we need. I pray that these verses will bless you and encourage you.
“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.”
Luke 2:10 NASB1995
“A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.”
Proverbs 17:22 NASB1995
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!”
Philippians 4:4 NASB1995
“You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
Psalm 16:11 NASB
“Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.”
Psalm 126:5 NASB
Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.
John 16:22 NASB
“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.”
John 15:10-11 NASB
Father, You know when we are struggling to be joyful. Even in difficult circumstances, help us to see that we can rejoice in You, find our hope in You, and find our peace in You. Thank You that You are the perfect source of all of these qualities. Help us to be joyful in You today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
