In Case of Emergency: Bible Verses for When Life is Falling Apart

What weighs heavy on you today? It could be:

  • A heavy burden you don’t feel capable to carry,
  • A worry you have had for ages has been realized,
  • A loss you hadn’t expected.

Friend, please know that God is there for you. You might not feel His presence, but the God who knows the number of hairs on our head knows that you are going through something. You might be in too much grief, anxiety, or weariness to know it. But the Lord is with you.

While “all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV),” I have found it useful to have a handful of verses to remind me of some key truths when I am overwhelmed by life. Some of these I’ve memorized, others I’ve highlighted in my Bible, and I’ve posted a few around the house so I can see them often. I pray that these will encourage your heart today.

Romans 8:38-39 ESV “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Lamentations 3:22-24 NASB95 “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I have hope in Him.’”

Colossians 3:2 NKJV “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Philippians 4:6-7 ESV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 8:28 NIV “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

I’d love to hear your favorite verses you turn to when times get tough! Please share in the comments.
