Nail polish colors can have the most creative names! I was stressed out and shopping online (a dangerous combination!) the other night, browsing nail polish colors, and came across OPI’s “Never Give Up!”, which even includes the exclamation point in its title. I ordered it right away, hoping that it would live up to the plum-mauve color it looks like on the computer screen. But my motivation really was the name of the polish. I needed a reminder that night not to give up where I was feeling discouraged. As Christians, there are areas where we can become discouraged more easily when we aren’t seeing a prayer answered or a person changing the way we thought he or she should. How can we handle these in a way that honors God and doesn’t leave us continually discouraged?
1. Wait for Him.
Our gracious God has a perfect plan and will carry it out according to His timing. Isaiah 33:2 ESV “O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble.”
2. Seek His will.
We may accept that God has a perfect plan but we often have one of our own, just in case we think God won’t come through. Instead, we should be focusing on accepting God’s will, letting go of our own control of the situation. Matthew 6:10 NLT tells us, “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
3. Hope in Him.
There are many things we can hope in besides God, including ourselves, other belief systems, powerful people, and money. Our hope should ultimately come from God. Lamentations 3:24 NASB says it perfectly. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.”
These steps can help us to not give up, even when we are discouraged and uncertain of the future. We can find our hope and encouragement in the Lord!
