Our Refuge and Our Fortress

Maybe you want someone to stand up for you today. Life is unfair, and you can’t shake this vulnerable feeling. “What bad thing is going to happen next?” might be on repeat in your head.

We go through too much of our life feeling alone, thinking that no one else understands what we are going through. (This is a lie – most people have been through enough heartbreak to relate to you on some level, even if your experiences don’t match.) We wonder where to turn. How are we going to get through this?

“I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:2 ESV

Today, I turn to Psalm 91 again to see these words. “You are my refuge and my fortress, and I trust you, God!” is the cry of my heart. It brings me comfort and hope. I love these precious words so I dig a little deeper into the original Hebrew words in it.

The word מַחֲסֶה (maḥăsê), is translated in the Old Testament as refuge and shelter. But it is also translated there as hope and trust. I can put my hope in the one who shelters me, and offers me refuge.

The word מָצוּד (māṣûḏ), is translated in the Bible as fortress. But it is also translated as castle and defense. This means that I am not putting my hope in something that is not strong enough to protect me. Not only does God offer to shelter me, He is strong enough to do so. My hope is not in vain.

We serve a strong and mighty God who loves us. Let us find our hope, our defense, our safe place, and our trust in Him. He is our refuge and our fortress.

This is part of my #walkthroughpsalm91 series. I hope you will join me throughout the year as I visit Psalm 91, a beautiful chapter that provides so much hope.
