We walked by a tree earlier this year that had dropped all of its leaves, save for some new growth. “The tree knows it is winter, but is waiting for spring,” I told my husband. A lone flower and a few green leaves gave me hope that the tree would be back to its original beauty soon.
As I write this, one of my best friends is entering hospice. She has struggled with cancer for several years now, and is entering her final days. My heart breaks that our journey on earth together is coming to a close. She has been such a dear friend to me, and it is hard to imagine life without her. Yet she has told me that she is at peace, and is not afraid of dying. She is tired of her physical pain, and ready to spend an eternity with God. Although she grieves to leave her family and friends behind, she isn’t afraid to go. She has set her mind on things above (Colossians 3:2).
The tree comes to mind again. If Jesus doesn’t come back during my lifetime or yours, then we are all going to die. We spend so much of life trying to grow, to add, to reach. Yet in the end, in the winter of our lives, we shed all the extra and wait for spring, to see our Heavenly Father. And it is beyond what we can imagine.
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.” Philippians 3:20-21 NASB1995 Because of her relationship with Jesus, my friend has citizenship in heaven. Her body will be healed forevermore. Winter will be forgotten and she will rejoice at the feet of our Savior!
My friend, if you are afraid of the winter of your life, if you are not prepared to meet God, can I ask you to consider again? If you aren’t sure what to do, https://peacewithgod.net/ is a good place to start to read more about Jesus and answer questions you might have about God.
Dear Lord, In John 1:12 NIV, I read, “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” Father, I pray that You would work on the hearts of those who do not know You, that they would want to be part of the family of God! And that Your presence would give peace to us as we navigate living life here, longing for heaven. We love You, Lord! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
